In the Ken Burn’s documentary from several years ago on the Viet Nam War, Le Minh Khue said when as a 16-year-old girl she had gone south from her village in North Viet Nam to work on the Ho Chi Minh Trail that Senator McCain was bombing she had carried with her a copy of “For Who the Bells Toll” because it had inspired her to serve a cause larger than herself. So here you had two individuals motivated by one of the great anti-war novels to kill each other in the name of serving a cause larger than themselves. My take away and what I think was Hemingway’s: Beware of causes and their hubristic proselytes who push them
